Some official follow up from the SHOT Show!
First off, we had a great show; we brought six pre-production guns to show and they were very well received. The interest in the Fortis seems to exceed our initial thoughts and the feedback we got from show attendees was most favorable and positive.
And then, enter the Internet Forum.
One of the interesting things that we have done with the Fortis Project, is this blog; it is a (nearly) real time glimpse into the development of the pistol, unlike the conventional marketing aspect of releasing a production product to the market with a “there it is, and it is what it is” statement. The down side to this is that it leaves the project open to much more speculation than normal. The Speculators, free to post their ideas on the many Internet Forums, remain largely free of any contradictory facts… that is, until we update this blog – as always, this is the only source of official Fortis information.
Rumor Control:
We are not yet taking pre-orders, the first step towards the Fortis release will most likely be the opportunity to reserve serial numbers – this will be announced on this blog when it happens.
Fortis production is NOT limited to 2,500 pistols… while that is our target goal for the first run, we will continue to make the original Fortis for as long as there is a demand.
The first release of the Fortis is designed to be as faithful to the original Bren Ten as possible, it looks like it does, because that is what the original Bren looked like – we did take some liberty with all silver “Vice” model, which of course pays homage to the unique pistol used in a popular television show.
We have not changed the “lines” of the frame… the guns that were shown at Shot 09 were on pre-production frames and, while nearly identical to the original Bren, these are not what will be used on the production gun. We do have the drawings, designs and prints from the original Bren, and the Standard Model Fortis is a dead ringer in the looks department.
Yes, there will be other models in the future, but future models will be a marked departure from the original Bren Ten – we hope to use the basic design as a springboard to advance the original concept into a more modern design; however, for now, the only models that are being made are the four different designs that were shown at Shot 09.
The four designs that we showed at Shot 09 were the (1) Standard Model, (2) Vice Model, (3) Special Forces Dark and, (4) Special Forces Light.
The short slide version of the Fortis is called the “Special Forces” model because… well, you can probably guess, that is what the short slide version of the original Bren was called.
Yes… the Gunsite Raven will be used on the Fortis, with permission from Gunsite.
The Fortis is very nice to shoot… the ergonomics and design of the pistol make shooting even full power 10mm Auto very controllable and comfortable – the current long slide Fortis weighs 2.25 pounds empty.
The 10mm Auto pushes a 180+ grain bullet at 1200+ feet per second… there are 15 of them in a Fortis magazine.
The Fortis is designed to use standard Witness magazines… we offer the Fortis with a magazine the replicates the look of the original Bren floor plate, but the magazine body is dimensionally identical to the Witness magazine.
The Fortis grip is not wider than the original Bren Ten; in fact, it is… well, here is what our Lead Engineer sent me about this topic: VLTOR has stated from the beginning that the FORTIS will adhere as close as possible to the original weapons as possible – and we have adhered to that fervently. Criticism regarding the widening of the grip area of the weapon is unfounded. In fact, the FORTIS is actually narrower in the grip area than the original weapon. Changes are planned in the grip area to make the ‘feel’ more true to the original, but rumors that we’ve increased ANY dimensions in the grip are untrue. The receiver is perhaps closer to the original than any other FORTIS component, save for the slide-stop for obvious reasons. We are very proud of this achievement, and hope that those claiming that this area is any wider will trust us on this – the new magazine fits with NO change to the grip. Also understand that any and all changes made to components were made for one of several reasons. Either the original part was not satisfactory in performance (the extractor), or did not lend itself well to either casting or CNC machining (IE: sear housing). We’ve tried to employ the highest quality processes throughout, and it shows in the final product. The FORTIS is rock-solid.
The FORTIS is the culmination of 20 years of dreams, 2 years of in-depth engineering and analysis, 9 months of collaboration with those that knew the most about the original guns, and 5 months of manufacturing setup. The results are high-quality parts that are optimized to production, while functioning more reliably in a similar form-factor to the original so that the final product, though very similar in all conceivable aspects, truly is an all-NEW endeavor. We believe that it is this dedication that will be most appreciated by our potential customers, those that want the gun of a man’s man: AMERICAN made, all steel, chambered for a HOT cartridge, plenty of capacity, and the level of quality one would come to expect from us.
Really not much else to say after that… Range testing continues, the Fortis is coming.
Thank you for the update. I look forward to reserving a serial number for one of these!
Great update, Eric!! Thanks much for the wealth of information and encouragement. Hopefully, folks will truly appreciate what is being done to bring this to fruition rather than winge about the differences and nuances between the original BT and the Fortis. You’ve undertaken to do the design right, taking the design concept and committed to truly engineering a great pistol from the basic idea that was the Bren Ten…you’ve taken a flawed and failed implementation of an amazing design that was ahead of it’s time then and still is, and made a better pistol than the Bren Ten could have been.
Thanks for the update. I stopped by the Vltor booth each day at SHOT and asked if I could have the Standard Model. The Bren Ten came and went before I could buy one and without available spares, it didn’t seem reasonable to acquire one as a shooter. I am grateful that Vltor is bringing the Fortis, an improved design, to the market. Keep at it guys, I’m ready for that Standard Model.
“Really not much else to say after that…”
Oh, I dunno, I’m waiting for you to say “Now accepting orders!” on the only pistol that could lure me away from my GSP.
I want serial number “X” (think the kgBATFE will accept Roman numerals?) on a 10mm SF in black.
How about a Combo Pack, with one frame and both calibers?
Thanks for the update and thank you so much for keeping the grip. I look forward to pre ordering at least two of your Fortis Pistols. I understand the Special Forces Light will have a light weight frame. Thank you again as the EAA Witness is not near the pistol the original Bren Ten was, but I no longer dare to shoot mine. Looking forward to owning many Fortis Pistols to shoot and yes, even carry. Good for you guys and all the Bren Ten Fans soon to become Fortis Fans. You Rock!
Many Thanks for the update. The display at the 09 SHOT Show was outstanding and I was pleased to see an actual pre-production Fortis. I very much appreciate the manufacturing updates and improvements to the original design. I want a ‘vice’ model as a shooter and not as a collector.
Very exciting news indeed. I have been following this project closely for several months now and am looking forward to reserving one of the serial numbers. I have my cash ready and am just waiting for the wrod. Thanks again Vltor for making a lot of shooters wildest dreams come true!!!
THANK YOU for the updates.A standard model and vice model are my first orders. When you have the production guns up and running orders will overwelm you. From what has been said it appears you have all the bases covered.Try to post some range reports here to keep us checking, maybe give people who have posted here a heads up when you have production guns ready. Waiting to place my orders,Keep up the good work.Dave
Thanks for helping dispell some of the rumors. I can’t wait for the release date.
Thanks for this update. I have wanted a Bren ten since they first came out, but like mny others, no luck. I know some get impatient, but I for one have wated over 20 years, so I will sit and wait until you guys feel they are ready to be released, and then I will buy at least one, promise. I \f you are taking polls or trying to keep track, add one!
Thank you for your efforts.
Gary
I’m looking forward to securing a serial number and a “place in line”. I have a Bren Ten, which I rarely shoot, and anticipate a sucessful introduction of it’s sucessor.
Thank you for the update! Looking forward to its pre-order and release.
Thanks so much for the update. The quality of your work and research shows that Vltor is committed to building a world-beating pistol and not just a nostalgia piece. That said, I’ll be first in line to get a ‘Vice’ model; I already have my cash set aside.
Thanks for the update! I’m curios what future upgrades might bring. Once the initial run of pistols are for sale, I hope Vltor will continue the blog to keep us posted on the new versions/updates planned.
Thank you very much for tis great update.
I look forward to reserving serial number sequential or identical, for one Special Forces Dark and one Special Forces Light, if it is possible.
So long !
Forgot to add that the Raven GunSite is a very classy touch and thank you for building it with DoubleTap in mind!
I just saw pics of the Models you had at the 09 Shot show. Awesome!! I was going to get a G20 while I was waiting for one. Now that I’ve seen what their going to look like I think I’ll wait and get two different Fortis models. The Glock will have to wait.
This is truly a great day in the ongoing saga of the Bren Ten. May the Fortis finally vindicate Jeff Cooper’s concept for the “finest handgun ever made.” As Eric Kincel and Vltor write the next great chapter, you can learn the remarkable history behind this gun and the awesome cartridge designed for it in the new book BREN TEN: The Heir Apparent (just google the book’s title). The Fortis is the Bren Ten as it was meant to be!!!
While the pistol itself might not be available anytime in the immediate future, how about magazines? I’d like to get a handful of 15rd magazines before the next round of gun control legislation makes them illegal to produce (remember 1994 and pre-ban mags?).
How about some pics of the pre-production guns you brought to shotshow? Grips? Nightsights?
love it can not wait to get mine. it will be carried and shot not put up. dah
From the pictures I’ve seen so far from the show, the guns look great. I’m in for an all-stainless Vice model and possibly a Special Forces. My only complaint is to please consider offering a naked slide version or reducing the lettering size on the Special Forces model. That gigantic lettering seems to cheapen it a little. Other than that, I can’t wait for the release!
I cannot tell you how excited I am to hear that the Fortis is continuing forward. I was a rabid fan of the Bren Ten in the ’80s (plus a rabid fan of Miami Vice) and the thought of being able to buy one finally has me on the edge of my seat.
I think I’m going to buy one of each of the first four models (well, depending on price, of course)!!
Nice description. Great to see the Bren 10 pistol out and about again. Will you be making the pistol California legal? A ten round magazine and testing by the state (and a small fee) is all that is required to be California legal. If not added to the “safe” list we residents cannot even import from other states.
How about some pictures of the pistols at SHOT show pleaaaase
Patiently waiting. More gun porn would be appreciated.
Please put a few pictures of the shot show guns on this weblog for us to check out!!!!
Even a tease is better than nothing!
.
Just passing by.Btw, you website have great content!

Once these get out and you’re looking for your next challenge, ever think of turning your attention towards the Auto Mag?
You guys could make it a winner!
Just a thought.
Thanks a Million for this undertaking, I thought for certain that this design was never to return to production. Looking forward to being an owner of a Fortis Pistol, I think we all would like to see any test fire video if at all possible.
Can I please buy a pistol soon? I’ve already bought some Double Tap, I just need the gun. Need help, please send gun.
No large roll marks or lettering please! They do seem to cheapen the pistol
Roll marks are fine! They are an endangered species. Save the roll marks!
Got a pool going over at Brenten forum as to when the Serial numbers will be opened to the Public. Place your bets ,Ladies and Gents! Sure the game is rigged, but if you don’t play you can’t win!
I can’t wait. This is perfect, it will be my intro to 10mm pistols.
I have seen a hint the a single stack pocket model might be offered. What a great back-up! Even if just in 45 ACP/40S&W/357 Sig.
That’s a wonderfull work, but, What about a .460 rowland pistol?
If that monster can be, will be the first one that use that caliber without modifications
Waiting for the next update Eric!!!! The suspense is killing me!
Sorry if I sound inpatient, but I guess I am. Are there any updates? Thanks
Sorry, but,
I’m tired of waiting. I went and bought myself an EAA Witness Elite Match in 10mm. I added a recoil management system from Alan Dugger of Springco and a 20# recoil spring from Wolff. I have been shooting a variety of Double Tap 10mm ammo with great results.
Anyway, at an initial investment of $467 + shipping, I believe that was an incredible deal which allowed me to purchase 12 more 15 round magazines from various vendors – ave. price: $24.00 per magazine. They are designated 101945 in case anyone is interested.
Frankly,
I’ve given up. I did myself a favor and got an EAA witness Match in 10mm and plenty of magazines.
All the best to you guys.
Gimme a release date. Or an estimated release date. Or an estimation of an estimated release date. I gotta know! I’m busy lining up the funds for an HK sear and trigger pack (good for me; bad for what’s left of the bank account.) Don’t worry, I’ll still be able to swing a pair (of Forti that is.) It’s just that the creditors and the girlfriend will be hounding me for a while to get my priorities straight. Yet little do they know that it is my priorities that are true and theirs that are skewed. As for the creditors, I can’t do much about them, but the woman I can send packing if need be. But please, (on her behalf (and without her knowledge)), when can I expect to return to some sort of fiscal sanity? In other words, how soon and how many pairs of shoes will it take to paper this over?
Hey how about an update on fools days that way no one can hold you to any thing you said
Very Sad. This forum was supposed to be a “real time look at pistol development” yet what I see here is months between updates, missed release dates, and a general unconcern for future customers. The people cheer leading here are going to be the ones talking about you product to shooters. All they are asking for a is few pictures and timely updates. I am 50 and remember the D&D Bren, the Falcon, and now the Fortis.
I can understand not wanting to make promises and offer dates that might need to be amended or changed. Getting guns out too soon or making promises has been the ruin of so many.
I think though that at a certian point you do owe such a loyal following an update even if it’s to say we’re working on it, it’s coming, here’s a picture or too.
I am sure most all will be forgiven the moment you start to ship but always take care of your troops (or in this case futrue customers)
P
One word question………. Price?
for the standard model.
Anyone know ?
yeah so you have 15 round capacity for the 10mm but what will be the capacity for the 45?
From the blog…
“Oh, one big question we get… Yes, we have magazines; the .45ACP is a 10 round magazine and the 10MM is a 15 round magazine, the price is no more than you would pay for any current production mag, and availability is not a problem. The only down side is that they will not retrofit the original Bren Ten.
Stay tuned folks… things are starting to move quickly.”
I need 2 Vice models 45ACP. And 10 clips. My Bren Ten M.S.M 45 acp model was stolen 18 years ago. I CAN’t WAIT to get them! Thanks for bring them back.
“.45ACP is a 10 round” didn’t notice.Too bad though, when i read the 10mm 15 rounds capacity I hoped that there will finally be a high quality steel gun that holds more than 10 rounds.
Hey Guys,
I would sell my 45 Glocks and my AR24 for a Fortis Bren. Put them up for sale already.
Kalifornia requires a State “Safe Gun List” testing certification and a magazine limited to 10 rounds. Please submit a prototype to this State for immediate testing and certification. You will sell many, many thousands of these REAL STEEL guns to the shooters and collectors in Kalifornia. I could care less about the 45 acp version, everyone has more than one pistol in that category already. We want something MO-BETTAH, a 10 mm magnum to be more precise, and not a POS plastic pistol. I live in Kalifornia; I do not have an FFL; but I really would appreciate having a shot at a certain, specific, serial number. Please advise how best to be prepared to reserve said serial number?
Will I have to call my firearms vendor to secure the serial number, or just to place the order for the gun?
Us, Impatient folks trying to patiently wait! Eric, are you going to give an email notification when pre-orders will be accepted?
Eric,
It would be a mutualy beneficial move if there could be some new updates to this site. Price, availability, proposed production times and a range report would assist everyone knowing where the pistol is in its development.
If these were delivered I am sure you would have most shooters who appreciate what this development means in practical terms, being more then willing to put down some $$’s to reserve their order requests.
I think a nice date for an update would be the 4th of July?
Looking forward to being updated as to where this project is.
