because you asked…

I was watching a science fiction show on the television this morning… some story about a guy that travels back in time, and how he has to deal with the difficulty of things he once took for granted, being impossible to even manufacture in the past.

The Fortis Pistol Project has been a lot like the premise of that show; it has been an opportunity for us to recreate the past, using today’s technology, and to really learn to appreciate the differences… let me give you an example.

The heart of an auto pistol is the barrel and slide, the fit between the two has to be precise and repeatable; without effecting reliability and function. It has always been the accepted practice to hand fit these parts, or to live with a loose fit – but that was then, this is now.

We continue to design, test and refine the Fortis… and we continue to explore how to best exploit the materials and manufacturing techniques available to us today. Take a look at our newest slides and barrels: by using modern alloys and sophisticated machining and heat treating processes, we are able to produce slide and barrel combinations that are of perfect fit, function and finish – something that quite simply could not have been done, even as recently as twenty-five years ago.

Oh, and of course you get some pictures of the newest slides and barrels…

So, in order to catch everyone up with the Fortis project, let’s take this opportunity to go over some of the more common questions, here goes:

Is the Fortis done? Well, no… but there is a Fortis, and we are down to making small changes – mostly to manufacturing techniques and fewer and fewer to the actual design. We still have some work to do, but more and more, we see the word “when” being replaced by “now that”.

So, when will it be done? We are still shooting for SHOT 09 as the debut of the production Fortis.

Are you taking pre-orders? Not yet… but this will be the first place that we will announce when we are.

How much will it cost? We are comfortable with saying that the standard Fortis will have a retail price of less than a thousand dollars.

How many models will there be? The first release will be of the standard model, this pistol is externally identical to the original Bren Ten, but with several internal improvements – it will be available in several combinations of 10MM or .45ACP; standard or short slide; and light or dark finishes.

What about the magazines? This is the one we get all the time… more than a few of you have figured it out though: we have designed the Fortis to use commercially available magazines from the EAA Witness line of pistols – we will of course offer our own Fortis magazine, but you will be able to use over the counter Witness magazines. Oh, and we have thousands of magazines on the way.

These are really works of art... these are post machining Fortis slides, the detail and precision of these parts is amazing.

Some of pre-prodcution barrels... any rumor that we are using a hexagonal bore is just that, a rumor.

Some of pre-prodcution barrels... any rumor that we are using a hexagonal bore is just that, a rumor.

The look of the original Bren Ten has not been betrayed, as evident in this picture...

The look of the original Bren Ten has not been betrayed.

The Fortis will have its own magazine... the original design of the floor plate is as much part of the Bren Ten look, as the castle barrel bushing. Regular, over the counter EAA Witness magazines will work in the Fortis, but we have thousands of Fortis magazines!

Thanks for your support; we are getting closer and closer.

Will extra magazine floor plates be offered for sale anytime soon?

Has a decision been made to change the shape & style of the front and rear sites? It also looks as though the ramp for the front site has disappeared. Maybe it’s just the photo’s but if this has changed, it will definitely have a notable change in the Bren Ten’s profile. Good news about the magazines and barrels.

    So many questions:

As per Bruce above – will the sights be the same. Will the rear sights be counter screwed, of click and set?

WIll the trigger creep be taken out of the new pistols or kept in?

Will the safety lock the hammer, down and at half cock then at full cock or just at full cock?

Will it come with an internal screwdriver as per the original Bren Ten.

How many rounds have you put through the test models. What is the round design life before repalcement.

Will they come with a lifetime warranty to the original user.

Can you pre-order serial numbers – or are you going to run a (sensible) chronological serial numbering system?

Will the serials start with the old model names SM/SFL/MSM etc – and are you going to keep the old model names gor the pistol?

Will there be a choice of grips.

Will there be a choice of magazine finishes.

And I could go on – but will summarise to say that I think you had best stack up on a lot of light full size frames! I am on for a full light colour SM and SFL.

I think presentation DM’s would be awesome.

I really hope this will happen!

Looks absolutely beautiful, keep the good hard work going, SHOT 09 will be here before we know it

Not to make this political or anything, but don’t worry about Obama, he won’t do anything at all. The last Automatic Weapons Ban was pushed by a republican congress ;) in ‘94, heres a shocker, the congressmen who are pushing the ban are all republicans too ;p

I’ll take 2 pistols btw, just tell me where to drop off the check

My only hope is that with the coming of the new administration in Washington that this pistol project will not fold as the Peregrine Falcon project did due to lack of capitol (funding) from a banking or economic system that is in the state that it is right now and the gun control issues that will without a doubt be raised by this new administration will also not halt this project. The Peregrine Falcon was almost ready to go into full production when the funding for the project was cut due to a savings and loan scandal.
The Fortis pistols must be ready to ship “as soon as possible” and put into the hands of gun owners where the word will get out that this pistol project will stand the test of time (this time).

    GOOD!!! Very GOOD!!!

I will take 1 of each type. My original “Viced” Bren Ten SM in 10mm Auto needs retiring, and these will fit the bill.

Will these have Bren Ten markings on both sides of the slides like the original? A Bren Ten design is just not right unless BREN TEN is on both sides like the original.

Alas, I am in Korea per directive from Uncle Sam. I hope the obamination coming does not stop this before I get home.

You can expect me to order some. Perfect homecoming present I say!!!

I too would like to purchase 2 pistols: one short slide (all dark) and 1 full size with a dark slide and stainless frame (I hope such a reverse twotone will be offered). Lastly no large roll marks! Let the gun’s design speak for itself… no need to advertise on the sides of the pistol in big letters. Let the owners do the bragging for you.

THANK YOU. THANK YOU . THANK YOU! After not hearing anything for 2 months, I was a little worried. The update was well worth the wait. I love that you kept the cross-bolt firing pin safety – it wouldn’t be a Bren without it. I anxiously await your next update.

I was not aware the BREN 10 was coming back. Most interesting. I had one of the original Bren 10’s reserved (#289). But I may have been disapointed in it. I have small hands and the double stack magazine and long trigger reach may make the pistol impractical for me.

But I would like to be able to give a viable weapon a try.

Just read some comments from another blog and it’s good to see things progressing along. I’m sure your release at the Shot Show will garner great interest, maybe more than you will realize. By now you probably have shooting prototypes in order. I would be eager to know how it shoots and round count during your test phase with various brands of ammo. A nice target would paint a helluva picture.

I would not mind “Fortis Ten” on the slide where “Bren Ten” used to be. We must remember that this is an entirely new, now soon-to-be, twice up-dated (Falcon and now Fortis) rendition of the Bren Ten and to re-name it as “Bren Ten” such would not be fair to Vltor and all the work that company has done to bring back a Bren Ten-design that will now stand the test of time. Perhaps Vltor can take suggestions or a poll from potential buyers on what should be enscribed on the slide. I would not mind just “Fortis” on the slide and the caliber designation on the barrel hood and the other side of the slide. If a chromed-slide version is proposed, “Miami Ten” or “Miami Classic” or “Vltor Vice Ten” would be cool. I think “Bren Ten Classic” would be too much, but…
I really like “Vltor Vice Ten” better than all. Hell, I don’t care if the slide is even unmarked. Just get the guns in the hands of us devoted fans.
The world of Brendom is coming to “full circle” soon.
    Can’t wait!

Like everyone else I am very happy that this looks like it is actually going to come about. I will be completely convinced when I have one each of the full-sized ones. Then I will finally be able to believe this isn’t all just a dream. Thanks to all of the people who have put so much work into this project. I’m counting down the days until the SHOT Show and the announcement.

Thanks for the great update! Not only in terms of being informative, but the nature of the information was all good! Shot ‘09 intro, under $1k, standardized mag, all that and a beautiful pistol as well.

Count me in for a full sized 45 and 10mm! If available in two tone(Stainless frame, dark slide) perfect, but all stainless is great too!
I’ve dreamt of owning a Bren Ten since reading about it from Col. Cooper’s writings…Can’t wait!
P.S. it should have some kind of VLTOR rollmark-just for the cool factor!

So what’s the impact of the financial markets on the production of this gun?

Brens seem to be cursed by finances with the last time the Peregrine got hit by the S&L scandal, etc., etc.

  30. December 6, 2008 at 11:29 pm

Under $1,000 is a darn good deal, supposing that it turns out as well as one might expect.

Beautiful pictures! Serious buyer here! Ready to buy. Put me on the FORTIS early order program. Looking to buy two. Exciting to see the FORTIS moving ahead nicely. The design improvements intrigue me the most over the original BREN TEN. How about throwing in a free VLTOR FORTIS TEE shirt, or extra mag, or Fortis gun rug for those who purchase early? Well, you guys get the hint.

It would be cool, if at some point, caliber conversion kits could be offered, such as offering a .40/.357 Sig conversion for the 10mm Bren, and full slide sets so you can go to .45 using the same frame.

And heck, while I’m dreaming, a 9mm option as well. :)

    dear sirs,
as hard as it is to get an american made handgun that suit’s the needs of the left handed shooter, i hope you will consider ambidextrous controls or at least the option of left hand controls without punishing the consumer for being left handed. thanks in advance.
